Orissa
The ancient state that rose to prominence under the Kingdom of Kharavela in the second half of the 1st century is an attractive land of treasure. Treasures that includes the culture and custom of the place, religion and traditions, art and literature along with its rich wildlife and pleasurable landscape.The state of Orissa that lies on the eastern coast of the Bay of Bengal was once a part of the Kalinga Kingdom whch is of historical importance due to the great war of Kalinga by the Mauryans under the leadership of Emperor Ashoka. The 482 km stretch of coast line is endowed with nature's plenty from the virgin beaches to the water falls on the eastern ghats dotted with temples and monuments.
Major Attractions of Orissa
Bhubaneswar - The state capital of Orissa has over hundred temples that signify its rich heritage of art and culture. The Lingaraja Temple,the Rajarani Temple of the 11th century, the Parasurameshwar and the Tribal research Museum all are of equal significance. Nearby are the Udayagiri caves and the botanical garden in Nandan Kanan which are of great importance for the tourist travelling to the state of Orissa.
Sun Temple at Konark - The colossus temple dedicated to the Sun God was built in the year 1278 and is referred to as the Black Pagoda. One of the grandest temple in India, it is widely known for the beauty and architectural grandness that are seen profoundly in its structure. The temple conceived as a chariot of the sun god having 24 wheels each of which is 10 feet in diameter decorated with elaborate carvings and is seen dragged by seven horses.
Jagannath Temple - Built during the 12th century by Ananta Barma Dev, it is one of the tallest monuments in the country with a height of 214 ft from the ground level. Consisting of four gates the temple is the place of worship of Lord Jagannath , the symbol of universal love. Along with the deity of Jagannath other Deities are Balabhadra, Sudharshan, Subhadra. The Maha prasad offered in the temple is believed to provide great spiritual advancement.
Puri Beach - Nearby the marine drive in Puri is found the beach which is popular among the pilgrimage since the beach is considered holy for cleansing the body. The purification dip in the beach water and the importance of it being the abode of Lord Jagannath had made it a center of attractive vacation for the HindusBindu Sagar Lake - The lake is the center of attraction around which is located a number of temples in Bhubaneswar.
Udaygiri and Khandagiri - These twin hills situated in Bhubaneswar have some of the ancient caves to its credit. Khandagiri which means "broken hill" and Udaygiri the "hill of the sunrise"serve as the site of the Jain Monastery which was carved in the shape of chambers in the face of the hill. The twin hills contain varieties of rock-cut caves dating back to the 2nd century BC, some of which have beautiful carvings. The Rani Gumpha or Queen's Cave is one of the largest and double-storied embellishment with beautiful carvings.
