This used to largest kingdom in the North East region of India. The name Assam is probably from name of the Id Ruling Dynasty of Ahom. After the independence this state has give birth to several new states and so the entire regions called The Seven Sister- Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Tripura.Assam can be predominately dived into two important regions- The Brahmaputra valley and break valley. A land traversed with hills, Valleys and plains the place in northeastern is heart of vibrant cultures of the northeastern region. This region is a part of the highest rainfall area of the world. The uneven land of undoubting green hills. Assam is blessed with rare scenic beauties. The dense forest has the most exotic wild life of the country. Kaziranga on the banks of Might Brahmaputra river is the most famous wild life sanctuary where the rare varity of one horned Indian Rhions can be seen. Like the Darjeeling Assam is also famous for Tea.

Guwahati : The capital of former Kamrup kings is the main commercial town and gateway to the northeastern region situated on the south banks of Brahmaputra river was capital of Assam till 1970. In 1971 the capital was shifted to Dispur. In ancient days it was known as pragiyotishpur. Presently it is throbbing Metropolis. The capital of Assam, Guwahati is the largest city in the north eastern region of India situated on the south banks of mighty Brahmaputra (son of Brahma) river and ringed on the other side by hills, the light of the East, or Pragjyotishpura, as it was known onece upon a time, is said to have beeb a vast kingdom during the epic period of Mahabharata. History, industry and scenic splendour are, in fact just a few ingredients of the region's attraction. Equally fascinating is the wide spectrum of ethnic and tribal cultures, all very distinct and symbolic of colorful textiles and beautiful handicrafts.
Jatinga: The Place is known to be suicide spot for thousands of birds. On dark night thousands of birds crash to death to burning torchesd of villagers. The phenomenon can be satisfactorily explained by any ornithologists.
Kaziranga: 220 Kms northeast of Guwahati is the Kaziranga wild life sanctuary. This was declared as wild life reserve in 1926. This park shaped by the nature herself. The mighty Brahmaputra river, the hill ranges and tiny rivulets gurgling through the forests and forming lakes and marshy lands is the ideal home of world famous one horned Rhino.Jorhat: This small town is on the hills is known for scenic beauty is also famous for Assamese Teas.
Sibsagar: Saivasager, a vast lake gives its present name Sibsagar to the old town of Rangpur. On the bank of the lake stands the Shiva- dol, or temple of Lord Shiva. These among other landmarks of history are loving monuments of the past Ahom glory. The Rang- ghar pavilon built by King Rudra singh. Ahom kings watched elephants fight from the pavilon, the Talatal- Ghar and the Kareng- Ghar are some of the major tourist attraction.
City Sights
Kamakhya Temple: This temple is the foremost shrine in Assam, associated with Goddess Kali, is an important centre of Shakti worship and Tantrics in India. Located on the sacred Nilachal Hill, the top of the hill offers a panoramic view of the River Brahmapurta and the city.
Umananda Temple: situated on the peacock Island in the Brahmaputra river, this Shiva temple is the site of the annual Shivratri Fair. The picturesque island is the smallest river island in the world.
Sukleswar Temple: A Janardan Temple, is located in the heart of the city. A Buddha image on the bank of the Brahmaputra at Sukleswar is an indication of assimilation between Hindu & Buddhist.
Nabagraha Temple: This was a great centre for the study of astrology and astronomy. It is because of this 'Temple of the Nine Planet' that Guwahati acquired its name of 'Pragjyoptishpura'- the city of the Eastern light.
