Khajuraho Travel
Khajuraho, a small town located in the northern part of the state of Madhya Pradesh was once the capital of Chandela dynasty. It is believed that it is the rule of the Chandela dynasty in the 9th century AD that bore emergence of Khajuraho. There is no evidence of the existence of the town before the 9th century.Today, Khajuraho is famous for its erotic temples with explicit ../images and sculptures exhibiting and celebrating sex, as was perhaps viewed by the society at that time.
This unabashed display is ironic when viewed in the context of India, where sex is still a taboo subject. It is believed that the town of Khajuraho was built as a temple town to begin with. The absence of any non-religious structures other than tanks and lakes provides a strong indication for the plan behind this township.
Its first structures have said to come up during the reign of Rahila around early 10th century and the last by Madan Verma during later 12th century.
Interestingly and perhaps for a good reason, by 16th century the town vanished from the historical Mughal records. Even though the records do mention the Kalinjas Fort (which is just about 100 Km away), the land of temples was never mentioned. This might have been a blessing in disguise that saved the town from Mughal destruction of its structures and temples. The city of Khajuraho was discovered by British engineer T.S. Burt. Today, Khajuraho is a little more than a five-star village with a cluster of shops, hotels and restaurants around its largest group of temples -Western Group of Temples.
