Chambal Travel
Though dacoities have decreased, Chambal, which is on the way from Agra to Gwalior, the land where behars extends mile after mile, is still a land of terror. 34 km on the Jhansi-Gwalior road is Datia, Cjwalior is 69 km away. Atop the hill on the right is the 7-storey milkwhite palace built in 1614 by Raja Vir Singh Deo of Tikamgarh to welcome Jehangir, the Mughal emperor, for which Datia is famed today. The ornamented 440-room palace has a unique collection of murals and frescos. At present it houses the Civil Defence department headquarters and a museum with a notable collection. There are 3 temples here and the Surya or sun temple is credited with the power of fulfilling the wishes of devotees even today. On the left 11 km away is the Sonagiri Hill where the 10th century Jain temple complex comprising 100 temples is situated. The energetic viewer can spend a night here at the CH,PWD IB or ordinary hotel Santosh Ldg. However, the sights can be seen from the bus on your way if you care to glance to your left and right. You can also see Deogarh, 106 km south of Jhansi. The 15th century Vishnu temple built during the reign of the Guptas has unique architecture with its towering spire. The cluster of 31 Jain temples of Karnali fort is another spectacular sight. 13 km west of Deogarh is the remarkable Dasavatar temple. The UPSTDC has Tourist Bungalow at Deogarh.
